iPhone users temporarily lose AT&T’s EDGE network
By Jonathan Schlaffer
Apple’s iPhone is a hit, selling more than 500,000 units this past weekend but it has problems. Some report the interface as slow; others have had trouble activating the system and as with almost every Apple product, users are complaining it is too easily broken. Then, as if a thief in the night, the EDGE network crashed leaving iPhone users without a data network but voice and messaging services were unaffected.
The failure occurred Monday in mostly the west and mid-west states but some users on the east coast saw some trouble as well. All phones on the EDGE network were affected, not just the iPhone.
Most EDGE services were restored by 7 p.m. eastern time on Monday, AT&T has isolated the problem, some fixes in place are temporary but the company does not expect any more EDGE interruptions.
An AT&T spokesman said he didn’t know when the problems started and that “the iPhone was not the cause.” It looks suspicious if you ask me.
According to PC World, users in; Dallas, Cincinnati, Tuscon, Oahu, Hawaii, Seattle, Portland, Pittsburgh and Indiana said that the EDGE network was down in their area.
Other forums are no doubt bursting with EDGE network failures as well, most likely disgruntled iPhone users.
