Media Defender up to old tricks? P2P.net just purchased

By George Gardner

Media Defender up to old tricks? P2P.net just purchased Last week, the news broke about Media Defender setting up fake web sites in an attempt to catch people who illegally download and share copyrighted files. But their latest would-be sting, p2p.net, may have again been foiled by the gentlemen at Torrentfreak.

Media Defender’s old site, MiiVi.com, came complete with a user registration, forum, and “family filter.” It allowed unsuspecting users to download ’in-theatre’ movies and offered a download client to ’speed up the downloading process.’

However, the download client was said to search your computer for other copyrighted files and report back to the bad guys (or good guys?). Shortly after MiVii was found out, the registrar information was changed and the site went down.

Now, TorrentFreak is reporting that the site P2P.net was purchased by Media Defender. P2P.net is currently undeveloped and now redirects to TorrentFreak’s exposing article, after it was found out.

Ironically, the news stirred up some confusion with the members of P2Pnet.net, as they had thought their site was being owned by Media Defender – scary.

Whether it was another scam or just more “internal testing,” at least the people are now aware of it, rendering Media Defender’s highly expensive domain useless.
