Toshiba to offer HDA2 HD-DVD player for $100

By Jonathan Schlaffer

Toshiba to offer HDA2 HD-DVD player for $100 Consider this a rumor for the time being but this is worth keeping an eye on. Just in time for the Home Media Expo, Toshiba released a letter stating that its HD A2 HD-DVD player will be available with three movies for $100.

The following letter was released to attendees:

“TOSHIBA HD DVD PLAYER for ONLY $99 PLUS 3 FREE HD DVD’s

For one week only, starting July 22, 2007, Toshiba will be offering the [$299] HD A2 player for only $99. With your purchase you will also receive 3 HD DVD’s.”

It’s not clear if that deal is only for retailers that will be attending the show or for consumers everywhere. Still, as Gizmodo says, it is worth keeping an eye on. For $100 I’d buy it even if it didn’t come with three movies which begs the question, which movies or can you select from any three titles?

If this is true, Toshiba is likely pulling a “Sony” by reducing the price on the old model and at the same time preparing to release a new model.

Even if Blu-Ray is winning, who could turn down a $100 HD-DVD player, if you can then you have a stronger will than I do.

[UPDATE:] Turns out that Toshiba won’t be allowing the average consumer to buy it at this price, the price is for show attendees only and the price isn’t so great after you have paid the $100 to $500 admittance fee. Oh well, it still doesn’t hurt to dream, does it?
