New Apple iMac: August 7?

By Danny Mendez

Sources indicate a refresh of the Apple iMac is due to hit stores in the first week of August. Although unconfirmed, the changes are rumored to consist of a new, thinner case and typical internal upgrades.

On July 6th, Thinksecret’s insider sources pointed to a release date in August, later confirming a specific date, August 7th, on July 17th.

The new iMac is said to sport a two inch thin, brushed aluminum enclosure  and will lack the large space below the monitor apparent in current versions. The 17″ iMac will disappear, leaving only the 20″ and 24″ models. Processors will max out at 2.4GHz in Apple’s favorite Core 2 Duo flavor.

As for software upgrades, the new iMac probably won’t come with anything different, but some sources say the revision of the iLife suite may appear in August, setting the stage for a software upgrade in the iMac as well. With Mac OS X Leopard supposedly coming in October, other sources indicate that the software suite will appear with the new operating system instead.

Perhaps the only downside the new iMac may bring is an increase in price. Currently, the 17″ iMac costs $899 with Apple’s college student discount, but, with that model dissappearing, Apple may lose any penny pinching customers that would have otherwise done business with the computer giant.
