HD-DVD not throwing in the towel quite yet
By Sean P. Aune
Despite numerous reports of how HD-DVD is suffering defeats in the format war, some of those claims are proving false, and the format is preparing for a whole new offensive to gain newly recruited supporters.
Earlier this week it was reported that Target stores were dumping the format in favor of its competitor, Blu-Ray. According to Major Tom, a popular blogger in Xbox circles, he has verified with higher ups in HD-DVD circles that the so-called “exclusive” is just really an aisle end cap promotion. This is not an unusual thing in major retailers, and Target is still going to be stocking both formats.
As for the new offensive, Microsoft issued a press release at this weeks San Diego Comic-Con International announcing a drop in price to their Xbox 360 HD-DVD add on. The player will be dropping in price from $199 to $179 and they will be offering you a mail-in for five free HD-DVD movies from a list of fifteen titles. This comes out to a $140 value just in the movies, in addition to the price drop; you will be adding the player for essentially $39.00.
While both formats seem to be winning small battles in the format war, neither seems to be gaining a clear upper hand.

That’s great news for competition. So what HD DVD players will be available at target? I know they will be selling the Sony dedicted Blu-ray player, not just the PS3.
