New iMac born and Mac Mini dies: August 7?
By Danny Mendez
Apple is to hold a press event on Tuesday August 7, 2007. Apple’s computer line will be the focus of the meeting.
Many expect Apple to release the long awaited refresh of the iMac computer. The event supports an early July rumor detailing the release of the iMac on August 7th. The new iMac is said to sport a two inch thin, brushed aluminum enclosure and will lack the large space below the monitor apparent in current versions. The 17″ iMac will disappear, leaving only the 20″ and 24″ models. Processors will max out at 2.4GHz in Apple’s favorite Core 2 Duo flavor.
An interesting note to make is Apple’s neglect of the Mac Mini. The Mac Mini hasn’t seen any real updates in over a year, and its hardware is beginning to see its age. The Mac Mini is the only Apple computer that hasn’t moved onto the better, 64-bit Core 2 Duo processor. PC Mag reports that the Mac Mini may see its demise at the meeting even though it is the most affordable way to enter the Apple’s world of computers.
If Apple kills the Mini, the only way to buy a Mac without a display would be to shell out $2,200 for a Mac Pro, which provides an unnecessary level of power to the average consumer.

“The new iMac is said to sport a two inch thin, brushed aluminum enclosure. . . .”
But the current iMac is less than 2 inches “thin”!
