AMD attempts to jump start its processor line

By Jonathan Schlaffer

Untitled-1 AMD used to be the preferred processor of gamers and multimedia producing enthusiasts, no more.  Intel now makes the best and fastest processor with the price/performance ratio that was once the hallmark of AMD.  And now AMD is attempting to strike back but it won’t win this way.

Just weeks before its Barcelona based chips are supposed to ship it has announced new Opteron processors.  The new Opteron chips will top out at 3.2GHz but carry a rather hefty price to go with it.

The highest end model 8224SE and 2224SE run at the new 3.2GHz speed and are priced at $873 and $2,149 respectively.  The lower end 3.0GHz version of the chip is targeted at the mainstream market and are priced between $698 and $1,514.

According to The Register, AMD still hopes to have Barcelona out the door in August with 2.0GHz and a power saving 1.9GHz version.  I still don’t expect AMD to overtake Intel as the preferred processor of gamers or anyone who has high-end processing needs any time soon.

I would have said the same thing about Intel last year…

I prefer whoever makes the best be it AMD or Intel, “marriages” of convenience, if you will… and you are correct…

just think, AMD wouldnt be around constantly whining and crying about intel if it wasnt for their first lawsuit against Intel to be able to clone the Pentium 2 as a cheaper choice. For a company that has taken Intel to court over and over constantly crying and whining so they can have INTEL’S technology is rather pathetic. Yes, AMD started making their own technologies, the first being the Thunderbird, but at a price of Intel’s technology. Remember people AMD would not be around if it werent for their constant crying in court rooms as usual when they start to falter off. (like now, and look, back in court with Intel) What else can they make up and plant in people’s minds to get more of Intel’s technology? Hi-K Gate tech next? OMG Get real people do your research and look whats goin on you AMD crybabies
