"Spock" people search engine goes public beta

"Spock" people search engine goes public beta It seems that people searches have been gaining more and more popularity.  The current and still most popular way to find people is to try searching for them on Google, Yahoo or even the Whitepages.  A new search engine is about to change all that.

Spock people search entered public beta today and is currently running quite slowly either due to being bombarded by search requests or because it’s still in beta.  You’ll have to be quite patient waiting for the page and search results to load.

This search engine hopes to index and organize all the public data about individuals and make it easier to discover.  The Whitepages, not to be outdone by Spock is moving itself to be a people search engine as well.

I’m not sure if I like the idea of a people search engine or not, it’s easy enough to find information about your friends and family now but what happens when a stranger comes across your information, especially someone with less than honorable intentions, what happens then?

I’m torn as to whether this is a good thing or not, there are pros and cons but which side outweighs the other?  I’m afraid only time will tell.

At Wink we believe that a great power of people search is being able to find people you have lost contact with. We’ve received emails from users that have found friends that they lost contact with 10 years ago. However, we totally respect that there are privacy concerns and that is why we focus on a person’s online identity. We also respond immediately to people’s requests to have their information removed from the Wink people search engine. I agree with you that this is a brand new way to look at people’s online identities and it will certainly evolve over time. Cheers, Cheralyn Watson, Community Manager, Wink
