D-Link joins widgets hype, gets one for routers

By Arnold Zafra

D-Link joins widgets hype, gets one for router A Yahoo widget for D-Link routers that provides real-time network information on a user’s desktop has been announced by D-Link. The new Yahoo widget monitors the status of users’ Internet, LAN and WLAN settings, as well as security settings, network devices and other network data.

With the Yahoo widget’s availability as an add on feature of D-Link’s routers, specifically the DIR-655 Xtreme N Router , D-Link becomes the first networking company to provide a router monitor to Yahoo’s selection of desktop utilities.

Daniel Kelly, marketing director for D-Link said in the press release that if computer users understand the power available to them using the Xtreme N Router, they could easily maintain maximum usage of the router on its peak.

Personally, I’m not sure how useful such widget might be to router users. It is very rare that users bother to check their connection information. What matters to the majority of network users is access to the internet at decent speed .

Very few people even bother to check on the wireless network connection status on their laptop which can be easily access by right-clicking the icon on the status bar on their desktop. Why bother installing another application? This sounds more like a marketing gimmick than anything.
