DirecTV, one of the national providers of satellite Television, is looking to enter the broadband Internet business by partnering with Current Group.

It was announced today that DirecTV was entering a wholesale distribution agreement with Current Group, a provider of Broadband over Power Lines, or BPL.

This arrangement will allow the satellite carrier to more directly compete with their cable Television competitors that offer package deals to their subscribers.

While DirecTV is most concerned with the reselling of VoIP services, this is a simplified manner of bring broadband access to all parts of the country, including those with no current solution.

To use BPL service, one only need plug a compatible modem to any outlet in their house and they will have 3 mbps download and upload speeds where the service is offered.  While not as fast as some cable connections, it will provide a much needed solution to those parts of the country with no access to other high speed options.  The price is also considered to be very competitive with current offerings.

This also has a benefit to the power companies as it allows for better monitoring of their power lines and where they need to be directing excess flow or throttling back.

The service will first be offered in the Dallas, TX area either late this year, or early the next.
