Google shuts down FacebookSecrets

By Ruben Francia

Google shut-down FacebookSecretsGoogle has shut down FacebookSecrets, the blog that posted the accidentally released source code for the Facebook main index page.

Facebook wanted all copies of the leaked source code removed from all sites. An email believed to come from Facebook said:

The posting of these materials infringes the copyrights of Facebook, Inc., and we request that you immediately remove the materials from your site. I may be contacted at this e-mail address, or by telephone at (removed). I hereby state my good faith belief that the posting of this material is not authorized by the copyright owner, its agent or the law, and that the information contained in this notice is accurate. Under penalty of perjury, I am authorized to act on behalf of the copyright owner. If these materials are not expeditiously removed, we reserve the right to pursue all legal remedies available to us, including seeking damages and injunctive relief.

But it seems Facebook has no way of contacting the blog owner of FacebookSecrets and has had to go through Google to have FacebookSecrets shut down. This resulted to the creation of new blog called Facebook Secrets Again, apparently made for the purpose of shutting down the FacebookSecrets. It contains two emails (DCMA Notices) from The Blogger Team.

The first email says:

“We are asking that you please remove the allegedly infringing content in your blog. If you do not do this by end of business tomorrow, 8/15/07, we will be forced to remove the posts in question. If we did not do so, we would be subject to a claim of copyright infringement, regardless of its merits.”

While the second email says:

“We have had to remove the content mentioned in the complaint from your blog. If we did not do so, we would be subject to a claim of copyright infringement, regardless of its merits.”

FacebookSecrets has gone but a new blog of the same name emerged, serving a totally different purpose.

I wonder what would have happened (or what would have not happened) if facebook secrets had their own domain name.
