Skype resuming normal service, outages not due to attack

By Jonathan Schlaffer

Skype outage to last 12 to 24 hours

Skype has announced that some users are now able to logon normally though there are still many without service and unable to logon, the system is slowly but surely resuming normal operation.  Many rumors were spreading around that the outage was due to some kind of maintenance or attack, that is not the case.

Skpype’s scheduled maintenance went ahead as scheduled and was in no part due to the service outage and no kind of DDoS or other attack was responsible.  The issue is still being fixed but rest assured that the worldwide Skype team is working on the problem, progress has been made and at the rate it is going, the issues should be fixed later today.

Some services are operating normally and yet more rumors spread that the web-based payment system update was in some way responsible for the problem, that is also not the case.

“The problem occurred because of a deficiency in an algorithm within Skype networking software. This controls the interaction between the user’s own Skype client and the rest of the Skype network.”  Once again, all relevant updates can be found at the Skype blog.
