AT&T Disables Portions Of BlackBerry 8820 To Help iPhone

By Sean P. Aune

AT&T Disables Portions Of BlackBerry 8820 To Help iPhone Reports are circulating that AT&T may be disabling portions of the upcoming BlackBerry 8820 so as not to damage sales of their exclusive Apple-produced iPhone.

BlackBerry Cool is reporting that they have received information from an AT&T “insider” that Ma Bell is disabling, or crippling, portions of the RIM-produced smartphone, namely the GPS software.  They will then ask that to access the functionality you use a third-party GPS package named TeleNav that costs $9.99 a month.

This is also on top of the rumor being reported by Engadget Mobile that the device’s WiFi will only be usable if you purchase an EDGE data plan to go along with it, which seems odd to most people.

While all this limiting is seen as a way to stave off people picking the new BlackBerry over the iPhone, there have been no reports of the same problems happening over at T-Mobile.  As far as anyone can tell, the phone will not be crippled in any way when it lands over at the big T.
