UBS Analyst: New iPods coming September
By Danny Mendez
After an investigation involving "checks and discussions" with Apple, a UBS Investment Research analyst concludes his report with iPod predictions for September.
AppleInsider reports the analyst also looked into iPhone demand, which seems steady enough to meet Apple’s sales goal of 730,000 units for this quarter. Instead of only investigating Apple stores, the analyst made several trips and calls to AT&T retail stores across the nation as well, and has concluded that each of AT&T’s 1800 US stores are selling about 3 iPhones per day. This conflicts with an earlier CIBC World Markets report that cosidered the iPhone demand as "small" and predicted a 3G version to hit by November for the Holiday Season.
In similar fasion, the UBS analyst believes Apple will refresh its iPod line in time for the Holiday Season. For the refresh, we’ll see higher capacity Nanos at "aggressive price points" and a widescreen, multi-touch video iPod retailing for less than three bills.
As a college student, this makes perfect sense to me as I’ve become used to the routine of going home for the summer and returning in the fall, which I’ve done twice already. As I head into the fall semester every year, Apple does the same thing: The company moves its old stock of portable media players by offering "free" iPods after rebate with the purchase of a Mac computer. Soon afterwards, the deal ends and, a couple weeks later, Apple refreshes its iPod line.
Sometimes the refresh is big and sometimes its small, but, whatever the case may be, a refresh happens.
