Updated: Apple’s new iPod: The iPod Touch?
By Danny Mendez
Apple will hold a media event in September that may introduce an iPod refresh as well as something a little better.
According to AppleInsider the media event will definitely be used to introduce a new Mac OSX based iPod line.
The iPod Touch, as 9 to 5 Mac is calling it, will take the same form factor as the iPhone with a few minor changes. The outside rim will be black, there won’t be a speaker or microphone, and it should be just a hair thicker. The Mac blog had a spy picture to show but was asked by Apple Legal to remove earlier spy shots of the new iPod Nano, so they’ve already “learned their lesson”.
What it will retain from the iPhone is OSX as the OS, the 480×320 screen, Cover Flow, and a single button for home navigation.
The iPod Nano will take more of a squarish shape and should retain the iPod wheel. AppleInsider believes the new Nano will also get OS X, but as to how the click wheel will work with OSX is unclear. Why would a click wheel iPod need OS X anyways?
Apple may also use the media event to introduce the second iteration of the rumored iPhone. AppleInsider also reports that it has “extremely reputable” sources that have told them that Apple’s roadmap for the 2007 calendar year includes two “distinct” iPhone models… the iPhone Nano or the true 3G iPhone?
Only time will tell, but we should know by the end of September.
Update: Well, September 5 passed and Apple introduced three new iPod models: The iPod touch, essentially a phone/camera-less iPhone, the iPod classic, a revamped traditional iPod coming in 80GB and 160GB configs, and the new Nano, similar to the last Nano but with a wider body and video capabilities. Check them out here.
