PS3 sales up 60%: Wii and Xbox 360 still ahead
By Danny Mendez
July NPD numbers are in, and it looks like it was a good month for everybody with industry sales totaling $925.5 million, up 37% year over year.
Sony’s experiencing a boost in sales due to its recent $100 price cut on the Playstation 3, and many are weary to buy an Xbox 360 due to the console’s rumored, ridiculous 33% failure rate. But that’s not stopping Microsoft from beating its main rival Sony, so it turns out Pachter, a Wedbush Morgan Securities analyst, was wrong when he predicted the PS3 would outsell the Xbox 360 for July.
GameDaily.biz reports the following sell-through numbers:
Wii: 425,000
DS: 405,000
PS2: 222,000
PSP: 214,000
X360: 170,000
PS3: 159,000
GBA: 87,000
That brings up an important question: Who the hell is buying the Game Boy Advance? That thing is long dead, and even Nintendo has declared the “Game Boy” brand dead.
Software sales also grew 11% to $419.2 million, with NCAA Football 08 declaring itself king:
NCAA Football 08—360—EA: 397,000
Guitar Hero Encore Rocks the 80s—PS2—Activision: 339,000
Wii Play w/remote—Wii—Nintendo: 278,000
NCAA Football 08—PS2—EA: 236,000
Mario Party 8—Wii—Nintendo: 177,000
NCAA Football 08—PS3—EA: 156,000
Pokemon Diamond—DS—Nintendo: 144,000
Transformers: The Game—PS2—Activision: 143,000
Guitar Hero II w/guitar—PS2—Activision: 138,000
Guitar Hero II w/guitar—360—Activision: 108,000
It seems business was great for everyone, although Xbox 360 sales are down a bit since June, the console does hold the top spot in software sales. Sony should be happy with the increase in sales, and Nintendo’s raking in the dough like usual.

Will you stop claiming the failure rate is 33% like it’s a fact, nobody knows what the actual failure rate is except microsoft, you can just as easily say “very high failure rate” or something like that without resorting to copying the same unsubstantiated Claims that other poorly sourced sites have, it just makes your site look ameturish.
August 26th, 2007
I’m sorry about that. I changed it to “rumored, ridiculous 33% failure rate”
August 26th, 2007
So Steve, what is the failure rate? If its far lower why haven’t Microsoft corrected anyone? 33% is the only figure available so until it’s corrected its the one that is rightly used. If the failure rate is only 10% the 360 would be 50 times more unreliable than the PS3.
Its astonishing that anyone is still buying it.
The failure rate seems to be a far bigger issue outside of the states. In the UK for instance sales of the 360 have plummeted. The new price cut came into effect a few days ago in the UK yet the highest ranked 360 on Amazon.co.uk is the Elite at #61 (the Premium is at #98). The Wii is at #2 with the PS3 at #12.

X-Cock 3 shitty still sucks regardless of it’s high failure rate! The design of it is CRAP! The liability is overwhelming. And thirdly the only star shining game for the Xbox 360 is Halo 3 so far. Yeah I heard Gears of War was good, but it won’t last as long as Halo. So there you have it, PS3 is on the rise to take the fame starting in 2008. Hats off to Halo 3 ONLY, but HAIL PS3 for 2008 and beyond!!!
August 26th, 2007
Its called “on the rise” cuz the ps3 is selling like crazy. Your whole comeback saying that the 360 outsells the ps3, is true but thats the past. “on the rise” means the future dumbass. Thats all the glory the 360 is going to have. The first year or two. Then ps3 will dominate like everyother playstation. Oh yeah whatever happened to HD-DVD??? If blockbuster is going to go to Blueray only, do you think big picture studios are going to go to keep making hd-dvd movies now since they cant even have it rented at blockbuster. Pretty sure thats a big deal to them. A lot of there sales come from them. I mean, high definition on movies is the next big thing. Looks like 360 lucked out. haha By the way thats the future aka “on the rise!!”

Hey Dustin Campbell, or whatever the hell your name is….you’re clearly a SONY fanboy, and by your writing style, and use of grammar, I’d guess you’re no older than 9 years of age.
I realize there is no age limit, or in your case, age minimum, on this forum; but, please spare us your dribble. If you want to continue to talk out of your ass, go back to posting on HSM 2 forum, and leave these forums for people who know what they’re talking about. Dumbass!

I find it funny how no one argues the Wii’s domination.
Maybe because there is nothing to argue about?

this is by far the worst week PRwise for sony and ps3. the only week that come even close to it was when DMC4 went multiplatform.
1- Paramount + dreamwork drop the blu ray therefore extending the format war. after hearing rumers about universal jumping ships, i have to say i didnt see that coming. that was big blow to sony considering their huge investment (ie ps3 market share) on da formatwar
2- many analysts cough*Pachter*cough said ps3 would outsell da 360 in July and vgchartz.com seems to back this up (finally a month ps3 can brag about somethin agaist 360 fans) and now i see da NPD results—> (my soul is being crushed)
3-two highly anticepated ps3 exclusive (da one i had hope to brag about in front of some 360 fanboys) for sony LAir and heavenly sword are getting early bad reviews from independent websides while bioshock (which is confimed its not going to ps3) is getting near perfect score.
i wont say the ps3 is dead but ill say its stearing at death in the eyes
ps im having doubt whether i i got right nextgen console (i dont own 360 and dont intend to until they intoduce the 65 nm chips and F#$% the wii its for granpas and little girls). hopefuly, warhawk will erase that doubt.

I’m sick of all these fanboys writing reviews yet they don’t even own a system. Let me give you a piece of advise, before bashing a company’s product and calling it a “piece of sh#%” why don’t you invest some money into both the systems, count the number of pros and cons after a couple of months of gameplay and take a peek into the section of the gamestore that you swore to not look because it’s a rival’s product, compare the games, and then you can rightfully claim that one company has better product than other. This applies to people who own both products and have experienced them both for a few months @ least. As an owner of both amazing systems PS3 and X-Box360 and months of gameplay, research, and analysis I have come up with this short list of pros and cons for both systems. I can write pages about the pros and cons, however these are the most commonly discussed.
X-Box360
Pros.
1:Excellent graphics, can almost go side by side with ps3
2:No lag in gameplay with it’s 3 processors and more selection of games compared 2 PS3. (but not enough)
3:Tons of memory for storage and downloads.
4:online gameplay with xbox live is amazing.
5:compatibility with differnt OS (same as ps3)
6:Sales are through the roof n still beating ps3
cons:
1:very noisy
2:Excellent games but not enough.
3:Does not come with HD dvd player (add on makes it more expensive than ps3)
4:high failure rate (yes it’s a fact)
and a couple of others but not so significant.
SONY PS3
Pros:
1:Amazing Graphics with it’s Cell processor and RSX graphics card. (yes gpu is better than xbx)
2:comes equiped with a bluray player. HDMI ready.
3:Extremely solid product with lotsa goodies and very low failure rate. (weighs a ton though)
4:Backward compatibility with ps1 n ps2 games, however not enough ps3 games yet.
5:Its a great deal with $100 price drop considering the fact that it includes a BDplayer.
6:
Cons:
1:Yes it’s a fact there aren’t enough good games “YET”… i’d leave it at that.
2:still pricey for some (if ur only going to use it for playing games) and not home entertainment.
3:Games out for PS3 aren’t up to it’s maximum potential. (it will take time. hopefully 08)
4:my favorite. “weighs a ton”.comon its not really a con cuz u won’t move it that often. it’s not psp
I can go on about the goodies bout both, but for the sake of arguement they are both great systems, however they both have room for improvement. For those who say PS3 doesn’t have enough games, it’s true because the launch titles weren’t that exciting except a couple of them. However it takes a year or two to really make games that lives up to PS3’s real potential. MotoCross is a minor example of ps3 graphics. However more exciting games are yet to be made. For those who say xbox sucks aren’t exactly familiar with it’s graphics and its true potential. X-Box has beautiful graphics and it’s an excellent system for true gamers who don’t care much about the home entertainment side of it. There are a lot of similarities between both systems, and people make false claims about either being a “piece of u know what” but they are not all true. Take ur time and do some reasearch while at it and then write your review. This is for the sake of arguement only, and not to put anyone down. And please do correct me if you think otherwise, but only if u cn back your arguement up.
All n all, both systems are great and have much room to improve. I do see a higher potential for future of PS3 games than any other system, but it’s not the best in the market yet. And Xbox is a great system with excellent games and yes it is cheaper, but not when u add up a HD DVD player to it.And but by no means can anyone claim it is a better system than PS3.
Thanks for reading…
Enjoy your system (whicher you have)

i dont think anybody is arguing over the wii’s domination because perhaps many of us have this feeling that, really, the wii will eventually fall into obscurity. visually it’s not really a ‘next gen’ console but it does not pretend to be. it’s new, it has a (gimmicky or intuitive… take ur pick) wii-mote controller and it’s cheap. especially that last point. once the price on the other consoles come down in price and perhaps the novelty of the wii controller begins to wayne, it may run out of puff? i dont know if anyone argues over this since many people don’t even put wii in the same class as the other 2. so they are included statistically and technically, but really a lot of people don’t see a wii as a direct competitor to a 360 or a ps3, more like something that ‘compliments’ them for fun. not a ‘replacement’…

Ok so I just happen to get my 5th Xbox360 back from repair last Tuesday (after 3 plus weeks total) and I go and snap on my hard drive so I can load my profile n’ stuff and get online and Bioshock…
Turn the power on I do, go to recover gamertag…then I get a message…”No storage device detected…need storage device to save profile” or something.
Um, didn’t I just “snap it on”? Ok so I call 1-800-4-my-xbox (I have it on speed dial) breakdown this situation…told I am to try my hard drive on another Xbox to see…I did…it works fine, all profile info is there…
Long story short, I’m waiting on my box now for what will be my 6th 360.
My brother’s is fine and he plays like 5 hours a day. My friends in FL are fine and they play daily…heck I baby my system….kid gloves you know.
Never owned a ps anything…owned almost ever other system though…anyway point here is this: I have owned at least 70 xbox 360 games, and when I get mine back – I’m going to hope like hell it don’t be brake and I can play Bioshock, Halo 3, Gears of War (greatest video game ever created for more reasons then I care to quantify), Call-O-Duty (pick one), THe Darkness…so-on and so forth.
Last thing about PS3, it is one fine machine for sure. I’d love the HD space for extra game content and it bugs the heck out of me that Xbox doesn’t use the hard drive to store in game data…that’s a bunch o junk.
Love my 360 and because of the games, probably always will. If you have a PS3 enjoy!

@The Future of Sega
It’s dumb logic to say because we don’t know what the failure rate is we’ll use 33%, it’s not even necessary to have a figure we know it’s too high and MS has altered the hardware and extended the warranty.
As for the 360 selling badly in the UK (were I live) it is still outselling the PS3 by a 2:1 ratio and the Wii is outselling it by 6:1 by official Chart track figures and not fanboy speculation.

*correction
360 is outselling the PS3 by 1.5 to 1 but in the month that the PS3 starter pack started selling and rumors of a upcoming price cut for the 360 was revealed.
Add Bioshock and Halo to the price cut and you should see a large spike in sales push the 360 sales further ahead.

Total US July Console sales:
Sony – 595,000
Microsoft – 170,000
Sales of Top Ten Software Titles:
Sony – 1,012,000
Microsoft – 505,000
Anyone who thinks Sony are being beaten by Microsoft may as well go the whole hog and tattoo ‘retard’ on their forehead.
August 27th, 2007
@Bootsy
Check your forehead mate because if anyone is a retard it’s you.
You’ve just added PSP, PS2 and PS3 sales together to try and make the PS3 look good, i’m surprised you didn’t add Sony Bravia TVs to that as well.
So shall we add all MS’s products to the argument and find out who’s worth more?
Grow up and stop being such a fanboy theres more to life than Sony and MS, have you ever heard of girls?
August 28th, 2007
Here’s my 2 cents. I own both consoles, the 360 and the PS3. I love playing games on both but I honestly prefer my PS3. I am currently playing Bioshock and it is amazing. The 360 has great games and graphics and online play, theres no argument there. Now the reasons why I prefer my PS3. People say that it still doesn’t have any quality games, that’s plain fiction. Any one who has a PS3 will tell you that Resistance Fall of Man is an outstanding game and Motorstorm in my opinion looks better than Dirt. Just because MGS4, FFXIII and KZ2 don’t come out until 2008 doesn’t mean that the PS3 doesn’t have any good games. Lair, Heavenly Sword, Uncharted, Eye of Judgment, Haze and Unreal Tournament 3. All coming out this year. MS is not the only one with a great lineup for the rest of this year it’s just that because of their install base of course you’re gonna hear more buzz about their games over what you would hear about the PS3 titles, that doesn’t make their line up better than Sony’s. People should use their heads and not just repeat what they hear from other people like it’s the bible or something. get some hours in on the games then you can talk crap until then refrain from commenting on something you have no clue about.
