Sex offender database plotted on Microsoft Virtual Earth
By John Pospisil
Worried that there might be sex offender living in your street? Vision 20/20 is now offering a free web-based service, the Peach of Mind (POM) Offender Locator, that allows those living in the US to easily locate sex offenders in their area by typing in an address, or simply zooming up on a map.
According to Vision 20/20, there are 650,000 registered sex offenders living in the US, with that number growing by 25,000 each month.
“Wouldn’t you like to know if any of them are living in your neighborhood?” asks the company.
Right clicking on the POM Offender Locator map plots all registered sex offenders in a particular area on a Microsoft Virtual Earth map. Clicking on a sex offender brings up profile that includes a picture and key prices of information, as well as an address.
Vision 20/20 is a Houston based telemetry service provider, with a mission ”to keep everybody safe”. The company also offers a free POM Alert System, which will send you an email if a sex offender moves into your area, and POM Pilot (GPS), a paid-for service, which allows you to track the location of individuals and vehicles. POM Pilot (GPS) can be set up so that you will receive an alert if the individual leaves a predefined or if a vehicle exceeds the speed limit. At the time of writing POM Pilot GPS didn’t seem to be available.
“Our primary concerns today are the security of our small children, the monitoring of teens, especially when driving, the safety of our elderly parents and our family and community’s welfare in times of terror and natural calamities,” said the company.
“In this endeavor to bring forth products to make American families pre-warned, Vision 20/20 brought to market the POM Offender Locator (BETA), the POM Alert System, and the POM Pilot, so that customers can have complete peace of mind. This has, by default, resulted in the creation of the world’s first artificially intelligent GPS system.”
Obviously the POM Offender Locator and POM Alert System are a means to promote the POM Pilot (GPS), from which Vision 20/20 hopes to make money. Having said that, parents, especially, will find the POM Offender Locator service very useful for staying aware of possible dangers in their neighborhood.

If one is to accept this kind of system there are other “types” of people who might also be considered for this program. Does anyone else see a problem with this?

This is a vilation of civil rights.
Just because individuals have been sex-offenders (pedofiles, rapists, etc) does not mean that they from that point on have lost their rights as citizens.
These people have served their time, paid their dues, and yes; law enforcement might require that they report their whereabouts depending on the crime and the law, any you might not get to work in certain professions again as a result of your crime (i.e. pedofile at a kindergarden), but beign tracked wherever you live by anyone is flat out wrong.
Replace ’sex-offender’ with the word ‘Jew’ or ‘Homosexual’ and there would be an upheval.
Former convicts allready have such an easy time to get jobs and a life after prison. This will really help.
Theres a reason why society have law-enforcement and that law enforcement has the rules that they have, otherwise it would just be mobs of people hanging whomever ‘looks guilty’ from the closest tree.
That is what i forsee from this system; Angry mobs of people that will eventually kill some innocent soul.
Words like ‘ethics’ and ‘thought through’ is not part of this company’s vocabulary

This site is incorrect. I entered several names I know are sex offenders and they are on the state registry, and they do not show up on this site, so what is the purpose if it’s out-dated?

ONe thing everyone must understand about the sex offender registraion system is it has got it all wrong. Many if not most people on it are NOT child molestors/rape ect. I am on the registration and let me tell you why. Then you decide if this is constitutional. In 1985 I was twenty. I was at a party and met a girl. we were all having a great time drinking and hanging out. I ended up in my car with this girl fooling around, no sex just fooling around. Turns out she was under age. There was nothing forced or anything like that. Long story short I did six months in the county jail. Now fast forward ten years. I was now married and had two children. I get a letter saying I am a sex offender and must register until I die. During some of these registrations I was spit on by cops, degraded, called a pedo ect. My registration was not on public record. Now fast forward to 07. Law changes, now I am placed on the public registration for all to see. It is twenty three years later. I had to tell my kids about this (killed me). Most people on my street will not talk to me anymore. I am considered the street perv. My daughter is harrased at school. My job may be lost with upcoming laws that will post my place of employment on the web. The boss told me he would have to fire me if that happens. Who is going to hire me now? I have spent more than twenty years building a career as a chef. I’ll be lucky to work at Mcdonalds now. I may not be able to live at the house I own as it is so close to the high school. So all you activist out there that think everyperson on the registry is a perv and a threat to you, do some research! by the way my writes are slashed every year with new law changes. Simply with the swipe of a pen this happens. Ask yourself if a persons writes can be changed that easy then what is next, for who, and for what reason. You may be next if you piss of the wrong person. I hope you all feel more protected from me after reading my story. Just for the record I never had a sex offence before or after that. Please go to your state reps no matter what state you live in and ask for sex offender regisration law reform. There are many people on it that do not need to be. This only clogs the system and cost millions in not needed spending. The shoot em all and sort out the bodies later aproach to this needs to end. Most politicians won’t deal with this because it looks bad for them. Most states say oh well we can’t lose our federal funding just to do what is proper. I and many others lives are ruined so you can feel safer, Yet you are not safer at all. Do the research. Thanks respond to charlesmcgonagle@comcast.net
