Industry analyst: Digg is not always right
My personal opinion of Digg is that it may possibly be one of the worst websites on the planet that just happens to be designed well. The stories that make the front page, is typically not real news, anything regarding Apple, especially iPods and of course Linux stories almost always makes the top stories. Yes, Apple is releasing new iPods, do I need to see that on the front page, EVERY. SINGLE. DAY. We know already, stop digging the stories.
I do not like Digg, Sam I am, I do not like it on a LAN, I do not like it on a WAN, I do not like Digg, Sam I am, I do not like this thing called Digg. Now then, mobs are almost always wrong seeing as how the least intelligent seem to run the show for some strange reason that seems to be the case. Well, except the hordes that buy iPods, you guys are okay since it is the best player on the market and all.
Digg was not always run by those with the collective intelligence that equates to a jar of mayonnaise but that makes the jar of Hellmans look bad, doesn’t it? No, when Digg started it was about tech news and just about tech news, which I enjoyed reading and there was almost always something of note on the front page. Digg went through several upgrades or “upgrades” as I like to call it and took several steps backwards.
As of right now several front page stories are (I’ll analyze them in a second), “Liquid Panty Remover [PIC],” “Improved iPhone Icons,” and “Bird Gets hit by Dolphin.” Wow, I think I damaged my IQ just by typing those.
Let’s tackle the Panty one first which is of course, an ad for liquor which well, is just pointless and ads should never ever make the front page of ANY website unless it’s part of the banner but this was a story submitted and “Dugg” by person(s) with an IQ equal to maybe a turnip.
Of the three the iPhone story is the best (sadly I had to read the article for purposes of this post) and the icons were just awful, the original icons are much better but I suppose that’s a matter of taste, anything iPhone will make the front page. I bet if someone wrote a story about the iPhone update a couple weeks ago, it would yet again make the front page of Digg.
The Dolphin, well, not only did that headline make my head hurt, I can just say “who cares?” A bird gets hit by a dolphin and this is “news.” Wow, okay, a bird pooped on my car this morning, maybe I’ll set up a camera so people can see THAT. Mundane and pointless, see how that works and no, that was just too far off the “stupidodometer” for me to even bother watching.
Sometimes I get the feeling some of these things just might be submitted by corporations looking to get a free plug, the panty article for instance. The front page of Digg rarely has anything I’ll actually bother reading, most of the time I’m rolling my eyes or laughing at the idiocy of the whole thing. I read Digg, yes, it’s almost part of my job but that’s the only reason I check in on Digg, I don’t actually submit stories or Digg any stories, mostly I just read skim Digg but I still hate it with a passion that goes deeper than my soul.
Digg founder, Kevin Rose told Business week posted at The Guardian, “The larger the critical mass of users and the collective wisdom applied to digg, the better and more relevant the stories get.” Yes, of course, because everyone needs a “Liquid Panty Remover.” No, by and large the masses are pretty stupid.
I didn’t even bother with the sex related articles that appear on Digg. Face facts, almost no women (I said almost) use Digg and users of Digg being primarily male and having nothing better to do than submit stories that range from pointless to stupid to something worse probably don’t have a girlfriend or wife and may have never been in a serious relationship or ever had face to face contact with a woman. I have no doubt there are those that this does not apply to but I’m safe in saying it applies to a majority. Maybe someone should to a survey to find out?
I fall on the “I hate Digg and wish it never existed” side. It’s golden age was when it was new way back in 2004. Had Digg stuck with just tech news, I think it would be okay, there’d still be the mundane and pointless but nothing like “Bird gets hit by dolphin” would make the front page news.
Before someone points out, yes I got this idea from Digg because it was the one and only article today that was worth my time and Digg is now just as useful as that bird poop drying on the roof of my car.
