The Google Phone: 5 facts
By Danny Mendez
It’s no longer a secret that Google’s been working on a mobile phone and/or mobile phone OS. Here are five facts about the Google Phone according to "reliable sources".
Google is expected to make an announcement regarding the Google Phone sometime post Labor Day repots Engadget, so we may find out how reliable these sources are soon. According to GigaOM’s sources, these are five true things about the Google Phone:
1. The gPhone, as i like to call it, OS is based on a mobile variant of Linux, and it can run Java virtual machines.
2. All of the gPhone’s applications are supposed to be Java apps. The OS can also run multimedia files.
3. The gPhone’s user interface isn’t anything revolutionary, but it does feature a search box. It’s typical of a mobile phone UI but is supposed to be done entirely in Java and is very responsive.
4. The gPhone will feature a browser similar to the pan-and-browse web browsers found in the iPhone and Symbian phones. The browser is supposed to be written in, once again, none other than Java, but GigaOM also received word that the browser is based on the WebKit core, the same enginge in Safari found in the iPhone and Macs.
5. At first, there was only one gPhone prototype, but Google has expanded their testing to include about 3 – 5 devices, most of which are made by HTC. All have Qwerty apps One model is very similar to the T-Mobile Dash.
Thanks to T3 for the gPhone concept picture.
