Lenovo to release solar powered desktop

Lenovo to release solar powered desktop So-called “green” PCs that are energy efficient have tended to have fairly weak hardware in the past, Lenovo is poised to change that with it’s new ThinkCentre A61e set to release in October.

According to Gizmodo, the system can be equipped with up to a 45-watt AMD Athlon 64×2 processor, up to 4GB of memory, 80GB to 750GB hard drives and an ATi X1200 graphics card rounds out the hardware package.

You can also get either a DVD-Rom (seriously?), DVD/CD-RW or DVDRW drive.  The usual ports are included but sadly there was no mention of a DVI port, which, if not included limits the use of the system.

What sets this computer apart from the competition is that there is an optional solar adapter though it was not mentioned exactly how much light is required to power the thing.  Of course, you’ll still need traditional AC power for your hungry 22″ Widescreen monitor and 7.1 dolby digital surround sound system but at least your PC won’t be sucking the watts.

Since this is a low power system, it is my guess that you wouldn’t have much luck upgrading the graphics in it.  But still, even if you do end up having to plug it in to an AC outlet, it is power efficient and puts the other “green” PCs to shame because almost all the others have abysmal specs that remind me of the late 90s.

If we could build a PC that would withstand the temperatures of direct sunlight, we may not even need to plug it in.
