First iPod Touch review, a summary

By Danny Mendez

First iPod Touch review, a summaryThe first official iPod Touch review is in, and the reviewers seem to love the imperfect yet really wonderful player.

To summarize the lengthy three page review, PC Magazine dubbed the iPod Touch the best portable media player ever. They seemed to love the sound quality, although they didn’t like the included ear buds, like usual.

Navigation is simple and intuitive, obviously, but with the Touch comes a new function for the tactile button on the front. A "double click" of the button makes music controls appear over whatever you’re doing, YouTube, Safari, etc.

Wi-Fi is a well received feature, and the Wi-Fi iTunes store is, in brief, "awesome":

Tap the 99-cent icon next to a song and it becomes a Buy Now button; tap it again and the button appears to jump into the lower right-hand corner tab, Downloads. If you click on Downloads, you can monitor the progress of your purchases. If your Wi-Fi signal is strong, the whole process, per song, does not take longer than about 15 seconds.

The Starbucks aspect of the Wi-Fi store couldn’t be tested as that goes live October 2.

Unfortunately, it seems Apple officially omitted the ability to edit/add Calendar entries without a computer. Hopefully hackers will come to our rescue

Everything else is identical or nearly identical to the iPhone, such as YouTube, browsing the Internet, viewing video, et

Browsing the Internet is also a glorious experience. The "pinch and expand" motion for the multi-touch screen is more useful here than anywhere else on the player, as it quickly zooms in on the headline you want to read or photo you want to see in detail.

They gave the iPod Touch five stars out of five with the following concluding remarks:

…these are not cheap devices, especially considering the storage limitations. Still, factor in the slick interface, elegant Web browser, the beautiful glass display, the seamless integration of the WiFi music store, and the iPod touch is worth the price. No portable media player has ever done this much so easily, or looked so good doing it.

    1. I want an ipod touch!:

Seems more and more reviewers are giving the iPod touch 5/5 despite its flaws (some lack of functionality, especially compared to the iPhone). I’ll have to wait and see and write a review when I get mine!

I have a question. Does this touch ipod break easily? Im not talking about scratches, but the actual funtion. Ive already been through 2 ipods. a mini and a nano, 2nd gen. the mini lasted 8 months and the nano lasted 11 months. so i have never celebrated any of my ipods birthdays, just their funerals. The songs would not play anymore and the battery would only last a couple hours, even when i have charged them for at least 3 hours and it said ‘charged’ on the screen of the ipod. I have treated both my ipods with the upmost respect possible. I really want to get a new music player, but i wasnt sure what because i wanted some sort of ipod but i was afraid it would break down on me again. Now i found the perfect ipod but im not sure if i should get it because it might just break down again. so please reply and tell me about this ipod.

I’ve only had my iPod Touch for a week, but it seems that the building materials for this new version of the iPod are of much higher quality. For example, the screen is made of real, scratch-resistant glass. I don’t use a screen protector, and I carry it in my pocket all the time as well as touch the screen all the time. It hasn’t scratched yet, or at least it hasn’t scratched enough for me to notice (and I notice such things very, very easily as I like my gadgets in perfect condition).

    4. Danny Mendez:

I forgot to mention, previous iPod models used plastic for the screen. That scratched very easily and REQUIRED a screen protector, otherwise it would get filled with scratches quickly.

    5. JS:

      Great review, great points :)

    6. Albert Brown:

I bought my touchscreen a few days ago, the screen went black and white, I contacted my supplier they happily have taken it back but i am still waiting …., But i agree with the scratch proof top notch but i my friend also had this error have you guys had this aswell?
