Sony puts all of it’s eggs in the Blu-ray basket

By Sean P. Aune

Sony puts all of it's eggs in the Blu-ray basket Only time will tell if this is a wise decision on the part of Sony, but it appears they are going for all-or-nothing with Blu-ray in Japan.

In a strategic move that will probably live on in history as either really bright, or really dumb, Sony is dumping the aging standard definition format DVD in its recorders.  From here on out, Sony will be utilizing Blu-ray in all their future digital records in Japan.

While the announcement was made, they also stated the new players would support dual-layer discs encoding in MPEG4 AVC.  These change will allow a 50GB Blu-ray disc store up to 16 hours of HDTV programming as opposed to the old 4 hours.

This could be considered a bold move in the never-ending high def format war.  Sony is getting in deeper and deeper with their format, not leaving them much wiggle room should there be any change in the overall fight.
