Apple ships iPod Touch without operating system
What’s going on in the industry today that it seems almost impossible for any manufacturer of any device to produce it perfectly the first time. Dell can’t manage to get an operating system or firmware installed which is more than Apple managed to do. An iPod Touch arrived without its operating system installed (OSX) but had the firmware and a diagnostic utility.
Some may be able to forgive Apple for using less then stellar displays in its laptops and 20″ iMacs, I cannot. Some may be able to forgive Apple for doing this and I really do hope it was limited to one unit but that’s probably not the case and it’s possible that a whole batch is affected but how many are made per batch is unknown.
Alright, according to Engadget, the iPod Touch doesn’t do much without OSX installed but the utility does show a disabled BlueTooth radio and temperature monitor though it does not appear to be ambient temperature as it is reading 45C which could be processor temperature or overall internal temperature. That should have been left enabled on OSX, I’d like to know what temperature it is operating at.
Apple, get your act together, I don’t know about the decision makers in the company but I would have found a new contractor by now, if the iPod Touch were made in Japan, Korea, Taiwan or basically anywhere besides China, these problems would not exist, unless this is a problem within Apple itself.
[UPDATE:] This may still be an isolated incident but it seems others are having problems as well, at least according to Engadget at the above link.
Okay Apple, there are some issues here, if whoever is responsible for manufacturing the iPods can’t actually manage to install the operating system, how about including the software to allow the installation of the OS, kind of like the restore discs that come with all Macs. In this case the iPod should come with the “OSX Mobile for iPod Touch” restoration disc or would that be too easy?

Is this an isolated incident, or have several been sold with this problem?

That’s what we’ll be trying to find out.

just happened to mine too. Kinda bummed, but then again, I didn’t think it I’d get one until the beginning of October, so, it’s not the end of the world. Apple told me to return it. None available now, so I’ll have to do that on Monday.

I agree about the crap Apple laptop displays. I have a 2.4 MacBook Pro with yellow bottom LED screen.

Dumbass that is iTunes, get a grip.

No, it’s not iTunes, I suggest you get a grip. iTunes has nothing to do with installing the iPod operating system (for the touch). The iPod Touch uses a mobile version of OSX which is factory installed by Apple, if a Touch ships without the OS installed, it must be sent back to Apple or replaced with a new unit. You cannot restore Mobile OSX yourself, if it is not installed.
If it is installed then a restoration through iTunes should be possible but you’re left standing with the check if Apple forgets to install it.
The other iPods use… something else so iTunes can handle those just fine… I hope you see the difference now. Unless, of course the iPod displays a sad face…

@Jonathan
You are incorrect.. The OS for the iPods, like the iPhone, is stored on Apple’s servers. That’s how updates are installed to devices; they download the new firmware from their servers which is installed on the device via iTunes, just like any other iPod.
Now, because the OS isn’t installed, it might not show up in iTunes, thus making it impossible to install the OS unless they did that manually, which would require some hacking.

I understand about the firmware, I thought I was being clear, what good does an UPDATE do if the base OS isn’t installed in the first place? That’s my point.

If you want to know what temperature an OS X machine is operating at, download the free Temperature Monitor, available on macupdate or versiontracker.
And damn, is this entry is horribly written. Just god-awful writing. Not sure how you can be a technology writer when you seem to be incompetent at both technology and writing.
