If you want to know what temperature an OS X machine is operating at, download the free Temperature Monitor, available on macupdate or versiontracker.

And damn, is this entry is horribly written. Just god-awful writing. Not sure how you can be a technology writer when you seem to be incompetent at both technology and writing.

I understand about the firmware, I thought I was being clear, what good does an UPDATE do if the base OS isn’t installed in the first place? That’s my point.

You are incorrect.. The OS for the iPods, like the iPhone, is stored on Apple’s servers. That’s how updates are installed to devices; they download the new firmware from their servers which is installed on the device via iTunes, just like any other iPod.

Now, because the OS isn’t installed, it might not show up in iTunes, thus making it impossible to install the OS unless they did that manually, which would require some hacking.

No, it’s not iTunes, I suggest you get a grip. iTunes has nothing to do with installing the iPod operating system (for the touch). The iPod Touch uses a mobile version of OSX which is factory installed by Apple, if a Touch ships without the OS installed, it must be sent back to Apple or replaced with a new unit. You cannot restore Mobile OSX yourself, if it is not installed.

If it is installed then a restoration through iTunes should be possible but you’re left standing with the check if Apple forgets to install it.

The other iPods use… something else so iTunes can handle those just fine… I hope you see the difference now. Unless, of course the iPod displays a sad face…

I agree about the crap Apple laptop displays. I have a 2.4 MacBook Pro with yellow bottom LED screen.

just happened to mine too. Kinda bummed, but then again, I didn’t think it I’d get one until the beginning of October, so, it’s not the end of the world. Apple told me to return it. None available now, so I’ll have to do that on Monday.
