YouTube restores controversial clip protested by Viacom

YouTube has restored a video clip that had been removed after Viacom claimed its copyright had been infringed.
Christopher Knight, 33, of Reidsville, found the video he made for the Rockingham County School Board 2006 election had been picked up by VH1 television show “WebJunk 2.0.”
Knight recorded the clip of that show and posted it on YouTube unedited, which started the controversy.
Citing copyright issues, Viacom asked YouTube last month to remove Knight’s recorded clip, which the video sharing site complied and notified Knight.
But Knight claimed that VH1 had never asked him for permission to air his video in the first place. Likewise, he never received any payment for its use.
According to Contact Music, he filed a DMCA counter-notification claim against Viacom and won.
YouTube restored the clip on Tuesday and informed Knight that it completed his DMCA counter-notification claim and that his account will not be penalized.
Despite Knight’s admission that he had suffered huge amount of frustration from this episode, he said on his blog, “At no point have I ever seen this, or even desired to see this, as a ‘get Viacom‘ thing”. Knight said “I’ve got nothing against Viacom.”
