Is Gmail coming to our offline desktops?

By Sean P. Aune

Is Gmail coming to our offline desktops? Rumors are circulating that Google may be bringing their mega-popular email to your desktops, freeing it from the tether that is an Internet connection.

While nothing concrete is known at this time, the Hindustan Times is reporting that Google is close to releasing an off-line mail reader.  The theory is that you will download your mail to a Google produced application, read and reply to the correspondence, and sync it with your mail account once you are back online.

Google is denying the reports at this time, but it’s not difficult to surmise the app is on its way with the off-line capabilities of Google Reader already in place.  From here you have to think that there may be off-line tools for Google Docs & Spreadsheets in the offing, making all the Google apps a true contender against Microsoft Office.
