iPod touch passes "torture" test
By Jonathan Schlaffer
There aren’t many people out there that would be willing to take a key, razor blade and safety pin to the pristine screen of their new $300 or $400 toy but someone out there was brave enough and not so surprisingly, it is very difficult to scratch the screen of the iPod Touch.
As pointed out in the comments at Gizmodo, the iPod Touch has a glass screen and it is impossible to scratch something that is geologically defined as being harder than the item you are trying to scratch it with. Keys, razor blades and safety pins will not harm the display (not that I would try it on purpose) but for those of you that like to keep fragile things (like iPods) in your pocket, the screen should stay scratch free.
The same thing cannot be said about the chrome back, which scratches as badly as previous iPods. I would still invest in a case to keep the back free of scratches but the screen doesn’t seem to need protection under normal use. By normal use I don’t mean actually tossing it in your backpack, briefcase or laptop bag so that in come in contact with other items, it should be handled gently, like other iPods.
There is no doubt that the glass screen and flash memory can take more abuse than previous iPods but I would not push that to the limit.
