Google rolls out social sharing bookmarklet

September 21, 2007

Google rolls out social sharing bookmarklet Google quietly rolled out a new site-wide feature called Google Shared Stuff.

There has been no official announcement about this new feature at the Official Google Blog or at any of the other Google blogs. Either the Google guys are busy with other bigger projects or this new feature is not yet official.

As the name suggests, Google Shared Stuff enables Google users to easily share, email or post in social bookmarking sites, any web pages easily with just a click of a social sharing button. Users can drag this button  email_share_button_unbranded  on their browser’s bookmark toolbar for easy access whenever they want to share web pages with their friends and networks.

When clicking on the sharing button, a pop-up window will appear giving users options on how they want to share the web pages. Users can either share just the link to the web page or share a thumbnail image of the page.

Web pages that users share are publicly available through the users’ Google profile page. To view this Shared Stuff, users must first login into their Google account.

When sharing a web page, Google Shared Stuff tracks the number of times the page has been shared and viewed. This may have an impact pn how Google’s search algorithm ranks a particular page, since it could be considered as a valid backlink that can be attributed to the shared web page. If this merits page ranking, expect SEOs to try to take advantage of the Shared Stuff facility – though no doubt Google will be quick to make adjustments if this becomes a problem.
