Hackers reverse engineer new Apple iPods to sync with Linux
A Linux hacker with a personal grudge against Apple developed a method to sync the new iPods through Linux. Unfortunately, Apple is not OK with their iPods being used on the Linux platform.
And we know Apple’s not OK with this since it added security measures to prevent this from occurring. But Ian Monroe, a Computer Science major at Truman State University, wants to use his new iPod with Linux. So he and his friends did what any good hackers would do, they figured out how to do it anyway.
As of now, it looks like they’re still working on the process to make it practical since his latest update regarding the software, in which he describes the success in synching his iPod to a Linux machine, is titled “iPod Classic Will be Supported”.
Currently, it is unknown if the work can be applied to “jailbreaking” the iPod Touch to allow third-party programs to be installed on the device. Unfortunately, progress on such an achievement has so far been apparently slow, but, if it’s possible, I have faith in the hacking community that they will figure out a way.
Update: I’m sorry readers. A reader has pointed out that it is not Monroe that is responsible for the process but rather the folks at #gtkpod that did the work. Monroe has at least some part in the process since he was in the channel when they made their discovery. Once again, I’m sorry for the mix up, and the article is now fixed.

It looks like mr “get_a_clue” needs to get a clue about civility. There’s no possible excuse on Earth for such unwarranted rudeness and profanity.

Why would you characterize the effort as being about a grudge against apple? If these guys had a grudge against apple, why would they have bought iPod’s in the first place? Seriously, this smacks of yet another media hit piece against anyone who dares criticize apple or do something they don’t like.

Just to answer your question, this comes from the blog I linked to in the article:
“I don’t keep it a secret that my grudge against Apple is somewhat personal…”
