AT&T suspends parental control service Smart Limits

AT&T suspends parental control service Smart LimitsAT&T has suspended its new wireless parental control system, Smart Limits, after the company realized that there was a potential issue with 911 emergency services.

The Smart Limits service, which was launched early this month, allows parents to limit how many minutes children can use a wireless phone, set limits on text and instant messages, calendar the time of day and days of the week that the phone can be used, and block calls and text messages from/to specific numbers.

While users are able to call 911 anytime even when limits are in effect, AT&T has discovered that the phones can’t be called back by 911 dispatchers should they be disconnected.

AT&T Mobility spokesman Mark Siegel told RCR News that “AT&T has suspended the service so that we could resolve this issue, and of course we apologize for any inconvenience.”

Siegel added that those who signed up for the service will receive a credit for the time it is unavailable.

At present, the company is working to fix the flaw and it says to resume the service once it does.

“We plan to relaunch it just as soon as possible,” Siegel said. “We’re just as eager to get it back as [customers] are to have it.”
