iPod Touch hacker gets shut down

iPod Touch hacker gets shut downEvery company on the planet has a right to protect its products but when is too much too much?  Apple acted quickly in the latest attempt to hack the iPod Touch and shut down (part) of a website that would have had contained the code to the iPod Touch.

A hacker going by the name of “Martyn” was going to download the code of his broken iPod Touch to a secure part of his website in an attempt to allow third party applications on the iPod Touch.  TUAW says he was not going to make the code public.

Apple found his website, contacted the ISP and notified it of a possible copyright infringement and so “Martyn” had to pull the page containing the code.  It isn’t clear how Apple was able to act so quickly but even before the upload was completed, his ISP had a takedown notice ready.

Apple is determined to keep the iPod Touch a closed system despite attempts to the contrary.  Even if someone does crack the iPod Touch, a firmware update is sure to “break” all that work and thus the cycle will begin again.

Here’s a note to Apple, provide the functionality people want, not what those within the company think it should be.  I don’t want the iPhone because of AT&T, that’s the only reason I don’t want it but I would like the email application, SMS and fully functional calendar.

I’d like to know how Apple was able to find out this information so quickly. Paranoid aren’t we, Apple?
