Updated: 3rd party iPhone apps are back: 1.1.1 firmware to 1.0.2 downgrade instructions
By Danny Mendez
Just when you thought you’d have to say bye to third party apps on the iPhone, here come the hackers to your rescue, downgrading your phone from the 1.1.1 firmware to the hackable 1.0.2.
A forum member, Kmac1985, at Hackintosh got his fifteen minutes of fame today when posted that he downgraded his phone to 1.0.2 after accidentally upgrading to 1.1.1.
At first, the other members met his declaration with doubt, and some even asked the forum admins to ban him and delete the post. He had no proof and could only post instructions for them to try out. Well, many tried it and are reporting success.
Straight from the iPhone Dev Wiki, here are the “Slightly Easier Instructions”:
1. Download the iPhone1,1_1.0.2_1C28_Restore.ipsw from Apple.
2. Connect your iPhone to your computer. Hold down the home button and power button for ten seconds until the phone turns off.
3. Release the power button but continue holding the home button. After about 10 seconds the computer will detect the iPhone in restore mode, and iTunes should tell you that the phone needs to be restored.
4. Hold down SHIFT key (Windows) or ALT-key (Mac) when clicking the Restore button, and select the file you downloaded previously.
5. Let the restore complete, and ignore the error at the end.
6. Your phone should show the “Connect to iTunes” screen with the yellow triangle.
7. Run AppTap (For Windows - For Mac) to jailbreak your phone - it will restore it to a working 1.0.2 firmware it even though you get errors.
8.Run AppTap again to actually install the installer.app.
Doing this will allow you to install third party apps. Unfortunately, it will not restore the modem firmware, so you will be unable to unlock your phone for use on other networks. But fear not, hackers are working around the clock to figure out the next iPhone hack, unlock, downgrade, etc.
I just wish someone would hurry up and hack the iPod Touch.
Update: Gizmodo reports that it is possible to use the Turbo SIM unlock method after downgrading and still retain phone functions (calling, SMS, etc).
They also report that users who used the paid service, iPhoneSimFree, can still retain calling functions after downgrading as well. With your non-AT&T SIM inside, just make sure to use iNdependence or iBrickr to “jailbreak” your phone after downgrading. Then run the iPhoneSIMFree unlock.
