Reversing iPhone’s firmware update for hacked iPhones not entirely successful

October 2, 2007

Early attempts to let owners of hacked iPhones roll back the Apple firmware upgrade that rendered their devices unusable fall short as it can only restore some of the functions but not the iPhone’s ability to make calls.

Instructions on how to roll back from the recent Apple firmware upgrade have begun to appear on the iPhone Dev Wiki, a Web site specifically for iPhone software hacks and tools.

Since that launched of iPhone, several hackers, enthusiasts and third party developers have been in pursuit to make the device run unauthorized software and to unlock it to be use on any mobile network.

Some of them made remarkable contributions. But, when Apple released a software upgrade for iPhone, most of their contributions went to dust and hacked iPhones became unusable.

This situation has made more challenging for hackers. Some of them are into a mission of reversing entirely the effects of this software upgrade while others are focusing on unlocking iPhone’s latest firmware.

The latest instructions to let owners of hacked iPhones roll back their firmware upgrades, however, can restore some of the device functions, but not the phone’s ability to make calls, according to the iPhone Dev Wiki.

“So far all attempts to downgrade the baseband have been unsuccessful,” the Wiki said. “There have been several reports of successful baseband downgrades online, but these haven’t been confirmed.”

But if and when hackers can unlock iPhone again, Apple could just release a next upgrade to lock it again. And each time hackers can unlock iPhone, the next release of an iPhone firmware will be more rigid and harder to unlock. In effect, hackers, in one way or another, are helping Apple to make their iPhone firmware more rigid, secure and reliable, which is good for the consumers.
