Facebook working to take on iTunes Store, Amazon MP3 Service

By Danny Mendez

Facebook working to take on iTunes Store, Amazon MP3 ServiceJust to let you know, it’s a rumor, and the rumor goes like this: Facebook is in the process of putting together a digital download music store similar to the iTunes Store and the Amazon MP3 Download service, but they’ve hit a couple of road bumps along the way.

According to allFacebook, "the unofficial facebook blog", an extremely reliable but anonymous source has informed allFacebook about the development, and, according the source, Facebook has been searching for a CEO to head the new subdivision. This is not a new development for Facebook as it has been working on the project for several months now.

The market Facebook will chase is (obviously) going to be college students, a relatively untapped source of money that no digital download service has been able to really grab so far due to music pirating.

In its current state, iTunes is destined to get weaker as it stubbornly employs DRM-laced AAC tracks on its buyers especially with DRM-Free solutions like the Amazon MP3 Download service and eMusic popping up. Even Microsoft is trying to go DRM-free. If there’s ever an opportunity for new download services to make a debut, now’s the time – if they travel the DRM-free route.
