FTC cracks down “Health Web sites” over unsupported claims

By Ruben Francia

FTC cracks down “Health Web sites” over unsupported claimsThe US Federal Trade Commission (FTC) has filed complaints against seven companies whose Web sites published unsupported health claims about the efficacy of the natural progesterone creams.

FTC told IDG News Services that these companies through its Web sites made claims that the natural progesterone creams are safe; effective in preventing or treating osteoporosis; and effective in preventing or reducing the risk of developing cancer, heart disease or other diseases. However, the agency is not aware of any scientific evidence that will support their claims.

“Millions of women seek safe, effective alternatives to hormone replacement therapy,” Lydia Parnes, director of the FTC’s Bureau of Consumer Protection. “These companies violated their trust by making claims they just couldn’t prove.”

Six of the sellers signed consent orders that settle FTC’s charges. The consent orders bar them from making unsubstantiated claims in the future. The charges against the seventh seller have not been settled, and will be heard by an administrative law judge.

Earlier, FTC sent warning letters to 34 health Web sites operators relative to unsubstantiated claims. The operators were advised to delete or revise any misleading or unsubstantiated claims from their Web sites. Twenty-seven have responded favorably to FTC warnings.

FTC recommends that consumers should consult their primary-care doctor or pharmacist to verify any health-related claims for any product.
