Updated: iPhone: Hackers close to breaking Apple’s 1.1.1 firmware

By Danny Mendez

iPhone: Hackers close to breaking 1.1.1 firmwareWith people working around the clock, the iPhone hacking community is making significant progress in breaking the 1.1.1 firmware.

The eventual goal is to develop, for the new 1.1.1 firmware, a relatively easy way to install 3rd party apps and to unlock the iPhone for use on any GSM network.

TUAW is live-blogging the community effort, reporting on all significant events as they occur. So far, it seems they’ve achieved some form of read and write access, the extraction of apps, and a bunch of other technical stuff that I, a mere commoner lacking 1337 hacking skills, can’t understand.

Regardless, things are looking up at both the live-blogging event and Hackint0sh.

Unfortunately, according to the iPod Touch Dev Wiki, things don’t seem to be moving forward (at all) for the Touch as there haven’t been any developments at the wiki for a while.

Whatever the case may be, I’d like to thank hackers around the world for working to free devices like the iPhone and iPod Touch from corporate chains.

Update: iPhone firmware 1.1.1 is officially hacked.
