One million Chinese computers get hit by holiday viruses
Nearly one million Chinese computers were hit by viruses during the week long National Day Holiday last week, according to Jiangmin, a leading Chinese anti-virus company.
On October 6 alone, the anti-virus company detected that more than 118,000 computers crashed. The attack came during the Golden Week national holiday when most people were off work with plenty of time to spend surfing the net at home.
“Viruses have been extremely active during the long vacation because more people chose to stay at home and surf the Internet, shopping online or playing online games,” He Gongdao, an anti-virus expert at Jiangmin told Xinhuanet.
China has more than 130 million internet users and they are increasingly facing attacks from viruses, adware, spyware, and other malware.
According to the latest survey conducted by the Ministry of Public Security, China has encountered a rising Internet security problem over the past three years, mainly triggered by a growing number of profit-driven computer virus writers, hackers and illegal traders, Xinhuanet wrote.
Earlier this year, President Hu Jintao launched a campaign to clean up the country’s Web pages in order to help build a “harmonious” society, Reuters reported.
However, the recent virus attacks demonstrate that many Chinese computers are still vulnerable. It seems there is still much work to be done by the Chinese Government to protect its Internet users.
