University of California gets $30.4 Million from Microsoft over patent settlement

The University of California (UC) has received a $30.4 Million settlement as a result of a patent dispute involving itself and Eolas Technologies, against Microsoft.
The university told the Settle Post-Intelligencer that it received the settlement from Microsoft, while the settlement between Microsoft and Eolas remains confidential.
The patent dispute began in 1999 when the Eolas Technologies and the university filed a suit claiming that Micorsoft’s Internet Explorer violated their patent for accessing interactive content on Web pages.
The settlement was disclosed by Mark Swords, Eolas Technologies chief operating officer, in a letter published in the Settle Post-Intelligencer, where he declared all the claims were settled.
“We are pleased to inform you that Eolas Technologies Inc. and Microsoft Corporation settled all claims between them in the Eolas Technologies Inc. and The Regents of the University of California v. Microsoft Corporation litigation on August 24, 2007.”
The terms of the agreement hold that neither side can disclose the terms of the settlement except for UC, which has a public status, and which by law is required to disclose what it received from the deal.
