Updated: iPod Touch hacking: The extremely easy Windows method
By Danny Mendez
When the recent iPod Touch jailbreak method was released, it was a Mac only operation. Meaning the multitudes of Windows users out in the wild with Touch units couldn’t get in on the action. The hacking community didn’t want to leave them waiting too long and today released an extremely easy, almost fully automated way of jailbreaking the iPod Touch and then installing 3rd party apps.
The process was posted and beta tested at the MacRumors forum. Some of the users claim that the process is so easy, it only takes about ten minutes to complete.
First, the typical warning associated with these types of things: Messing with your iPod Touch can cause all types of fixable and unfixable damage. That being said, if you stay within the confines of these instructions, anything you do should be fixable through a complete software restore via iTunes.
Step 1: Download and extract all the files hosted here:
http://rapidshare.com/files/61866178/touchFree.zip
Step 2: Copy iTunesMobileDevice.dll from C:\Program Files\Common Files\Apple\Mobile Device Support\bin to the same folder as touchFree.exe.
Step 3: Restore or upgrade your iPod’s software to a clean 1.1.1 state. Although this step isn’t sometimes necessary, it could keep problems from popping up later in the process. I had to start from a fresh 1.1.1 restore after getting halfway through the Mac method.
Step 4: Load http://jailbreak.toc2rta.com on your iTouch’s browser, but only do this if your going to do the whole process as doing this will make your iPod incompatible with iTunes until we fix this later in a later step.
Step 5: Run touchFree.exe. It will ask you to reboot your iPod. Just turn it off and turn it back on as many times as it asks you. It’ll then ask you to enter your iPod’s IP address, which you should be able to find under your iPod’s settings. Say yes if it asks you something about the SSH host key.
Step 6: Finish the installation of Installer.app by doing the following…
Step 6a: Launch an SSH session into your iPod. You should be able to do this through PuTTy, which is included in the package linked to above. Use “Root” as the username and “alpine” as the password.
Step 6b: Follow steps 7.5-7.11 in http://www.iphonealley.com/news/ipho…allation-guide (when they say type, they mean type in the SSH session)
Step 6c: You must then install the “Community Sources” package through Installer.app before Trip1PogoStick, the SpringBoard hack, is visible.
Update: An even easier “one-click” hacking solution was just released, and you can find it here.

I believe usernames and passwords are case sensitive, so you would need to login w/ the user ‘root’ not ‘Root’…
Other than that, good writeup (if it’s yours, I can swear I’ve seen almost identical instructions on other boards)

For me, I’ve always needed to use “Root” as “root” doesn’t seem to work. As for the instructions, the core of it was taken from the MacRumors forum and I added details to it that I thought necessary or helpful.

Regarding the time out, there’s a good possibility that you’re using the wrong IP address or your network is preventing your computer and your iTouch from communicating.
