Britain to start analogue to digital television switchover
By Ruben Francia
Digital UK, the body overseeing the phasing out of the analogue TV signal, has announced that the first phase of the analogue to digital switchover will start next Wednesday.
Ford Ennals, Digital UK’s chief executive, has already sent the message to the residents of Whitehaven and the wider Copeland district, who will be first affected by the digital switchover.
“We feel we are on track for switchover. There is now a genuine sense of anticipation,” Ennals said according to the Whitehaven News. ”There’s been a lot of preparation and planning and now people just want to get on with it and get those extra channels.”
However, Ennals noted that despite a huge publicity campaign for the coming switchover, thousands of households have not yet bought the set-top box required to receive digital channels.
As a result, his main message centers on the people who are not yet prepared for the switchover.
“We urge people to take action now because we don’t want people to miss out. This is an important part of British broadcasting history because Copeland is the lead area.”
Those who have not converted their old TV sets to digital will be left staring at a blank screen.
The implementation of the switchover will move from region to region and is expected to be completed by the end of 2012.
