Samsung’s got the "skinny" on LCD-TVs
By George Gardner
Samsung’s ultra-thin, anorexic LCD display will be turning heads at one of the world’s largest trade shows dedicated to flat panel displays. The 40 inch diagonal display has a thickness nearly the size of a DVD case.
And what more would you expect from the world’s largest provider of thin-film-transistor LCD displays? Samsung will be showcasing its new technology at the 2007 FPD International, in Yokohama, Japan, between October 24-26.
Samsung’s 40″ display (shown) measures in at only 10mm thick, or .39 of an inch. The new display has the same profile as the 10-20 inch LCD displays designed for computer monitors.
Using an LED backlight, this panel reproduces an amazing (at its thickness and size) 92% of the NTSC standard for color saturation while consuming very little power (90 watts or less).
Samsung will also be unveiling panels for notebook PCs that allow its users to view HD movies at a 16:9 aspect ratio on their notebooks. This model will be available in 16 and 18.4 inch screen sizes.
For desktop monitors, Samsung is boasting a new 22 inch LCD desktop monitor with a DisplayPort interface which will enhance the use of ultra high quality graphics.
Samsung also plans to show off a 2.1 inch mobile display which offers a sensor-based automatic brightness control; this function will automatically adjust the brightness of the display’s backlight to match ambient lighting. For example, when a user is in well lit area (such as outdoor), the sensor will increase the brightness of the display to allow increased visibility in sunlight. Dimming the display in dark rooms, where a strong backlight isn’t required, allows this display to lower its power consumption by up to 25 percent.
Additionally, Samsung will layout a guideline for its next-generation concepts including a 14.3-inch plastic display, 8.1-inch e-paper, and a 14.1-inch active-matrix OLED.
