Is Linux Bashing a New Olympic Sport?
By Ken Hess
Our little Penguin is getting dissed from a very unlikely source, InfoWorld. Randall Kennedy (InfoWorld) casts his pearls of misguided wisdom in his 5-part series "Why Ubuntu (Still) Sucks." Frankly, I am shocked that anyone can honestly and professionally write about something that they are so uninformed about. Whatever happened to "write what you know?"
I don’t know what Penguin pissed in his Corn Flakes but obviously he isn’t in any position to make such observations. His editor should have reprimanded him for the first article and prevented him from publishing the other four. Now, don’t get me wrong, I feel that freedom of speech is for everyone–not just misinformed journalists. My purpose is not to discredit Mr. Kennedy but to inform him of his blind prejudice.
I agree in a way with the general flavor of his article but his delivery leaves a sour taste on my palate. Ubuntu does have a ways to go before it can go head-to-head with a Microsoft Desktop Operating System. Conversely, Ubuntu is programmed and supported by volunteers. How great would Windows be if that were the case with it? Chances are it would be better in some ways and not as good in others but one thing for sure; it would be far less cumbersome to deal with from a user or support standpoint. Give Ubuntu 500 well-paid programmers and we will see which Operating System is preferred by 4 out of 5 users in a couple of years.
Mr. Kennedy, before you shoot your mouth off, you might just consider what I have said here. You are comparing apples and tennis rackets by comparing Windows with Ubuntu. Chances are they will never be "comparable" from your point of view and I don’t really know if they should be.

Modern desktop Linux is a viable desktop for many users now.
Yes, Windows is more polished in some areas.
But Linux is more polished in others.
And Linux is far more functional.
And free.
And far far more secure and robust (from bit-rot).

Mr. Hess,
Your article has points. But I have to say, you won’t get away with the apples and oranges argument. People are naturally going to compare Ubuntu to Windows. Human nature.
But you know what, I want them to. But I want them to compare Kubuntu 7.10 to Vista. It will be a matter of do you want your PC to work or not? Once that realization is seeded its game-set-match.
As Open Source supporters we better get use to the slings and arrows. The barbs will only get sharper as Linux Desktop penetration continues. Microsoft will not give up market share without a fight.

i bash the command line junk all day long. hate it! stupid!!
love linux though!!
usually much more leary about some updates that come through the various repositories in linux than i ever was in windows.
unzipping password protected files sometimes sucks in linux also and cd burning is not as dependable, although if you slow down the burner a notch or two, it’s not bad.
still,
love the look and feel of linux though!!
