New service streams PC games to PS3, Linux boxes, phones

By Danny Mendez

New service streams PC games to PS3, Linux boxes, phonesA new service promises to stream your PC games over the Internet to other PCs, Linux boxes, TVs, and even your PS3. It works by converting games into IPTV channels called “Game Streams”.

Currently, the service, called StreamMyGame.com, is free, and works through their Streamer plugin. They promise no lag in, and the receiving machines do not need to have the game installed. Game streams don’t lack in resolution either. You can configure the service to work at a maximum of 3200 x 2400, or Super HDTV.

StreamMyGame works with any games based on Microsoft’s DirectX8, Directx9, and DriectX10 including such titles as FIFA 08 and Bioshock. Currently, it only works with Windows XP and Vista boxes, but Linux, PS3, mobile phone, and set-top box compatibility will supposedly follow.

To be honest, I was skeptical about the service when we first received the press release. We get a lot of email from really sketchy companies, but, after visiting the site and watching their flash animation demo, I think this product has some real legs to it. It can especially be useful in streaming games to your TV, and the product would be invaluable if it ever gets PS3 support. Heck, it doesn’t cost anything, and I’d try it but I don’t do PC games.

The service also offers support for recording and broadcasting your games over the web, and their “YouTube ready MP4 format keeps file sizes low.”
