US spammer gets two years in jail for AOL spam scam
By Ruben Francia
A New Jersey man was sentenced to prison for more than two years by a New York judge for his part in a spamming operation that sent out millions of unsolicited emails to America Online subscribers.
Todd Moeller, 28, after pleading guilty earlier this year, was sentenced 27 months in prison and fined more than 180,000 dollars.
He was caught in a sting operation after making a deal with a government informant to send junk email advertising for an unspecified commercial product to around 1.2 million customers of Internet service provider America Online (AOL) in return for 50 percent of the profits.
The court paper said, Moeller and co-defendant Adam Vitale of New York, who also pleaded guilty, by-passed AOL’s filter system by using a variety of computer servers and changing the header information on e-mails to ensure they could not be traced, Reuters writes.
The convicted spammer apparently profited $40,000 a month from spamming scam activities.
Vitale is due to be sentenced on November 13.
