Nokia interested in Google’s Android mobile phone OS?

By Danny Mendez

Nokia interested in Google's Android mobile phone OS?Nokia isn’t one to take threats to its market share without speaking out. When Apple released the closed iPhone system, Nokia bragged that the "best devices have no limits." After Google announced its open mobile phone platform, Nokia publicly announced that Google’s entry into the market is a minimal threat, but the company may is now likely considering Google as an ally rather than a foe.

Kari Tuutti, spokesman for Nokia’s multimedia unit, commented on Nokia’s position according to Reuters. "It’s not ruled out at all. If we would see this as beneficial we would think about taking part in it."

Currently, Nokia owns 48% of the Symbian OS, which powers about 75% of the world’s smartphones. There’s no doubt why Nokia could see Google as a threat, but instead of fighting the Internet giant, Nokia perhaps will take a Google approach to business. Yes, that has a double meaning.

Google seems to have invested in everybody’s business, providing its services to other mobile phone operating systems like the Palm OS. While launching its mobile phone platform, Google will most likely continue to provide its services to its competitors, making sure Google is an significant part of the mobile phone market no matter what phone one uses. If Nokia adopts this business practice, investing in both its own Symbian OS and Google’s Android OS, Nokia could also ensure that its presence in the mobile market stays strong.

Unfortunately for Nokia, investing in Google’s future could also equate to investing in Nokia’s competitors such as Motorola, HTC, and any other handset makers that join Google’s alliance. Perhaps this would help the market mature as a whole rather than help individual entities, but in this day and age, that’s just wishful thinking.
