Google Maps to help drivers out at the gas pump

By Ema Kwiatkowski

googlegas Soon, gasoline pumps made by Gilbarco will help motorists filling up their gas tanks to find a place to stop for lunch or get directions using a Google search tool right on the pump.

Very limited initially, the Google service will deliver local business listings and maps to the display screens of gasoline pumps. Using the pump’s touch pad, drivers will be able to choose a category, such as restaurants, hospitals, hotels, or landmarks. Easy-to-read instructions are printed on the receipt printer, making it convenient to grab and take in the car.

Retailers will choose the listings displayed. Motorists will not be able to search specifically for their own destinations, although they can view a local maps on the pump’s screen and locate their desired destination. The consumer input feature is expected to be introduced later.

The new Google-driven service will begin testing at 3,600 stations across the United States next month.
