Evidence: Xbox 360 getting DivX support

Evidence: Xbox 360 getting DivX supportEverybody knows that DivX support on the Xbox 360 could only be described in one word: awesome. The ability for users to stream their countless DivX videos without having to convert them first is a desperately wanted feature, and it seems a Q&A session with the Divx CEO should give such users hope.

JP Morgan analyst Paul Coster interviewed Divx CEO, Kevin Hell, after the company’s earnings report on Tuesday. At about 24 minutes into the conversation, according to Seeking Alpha, the following was said:

Coster – “Just a minor point here, but there was a recent Microsoft (MSFT) conference where I believe their media extender now incorporates the DivX codec on it, is that correct? Can you confirm that and does that mean we’re soon going to see Xboxes with DivX on them?

Hell – “Yes! that, uh, we’re in discussions with Microsoft on that at this point in time, so I can’t go into any great detail on that. Um that is not a certified, that is not a certified or licensed product at this time.”

At that point in the conversation, DivX CFO Dan Halvorson interrupted the exchange, quickly changing the subject.

So Does this mean the Xbox 360 is getting DivX support? Not necessarily. Companies test features and products all the time that never get released; here’s to hoping this isn’t one of them.
