Zune boss hints at future Zune Phone
By Danny Mendez
In our continuing coverage of the Monday morning Zune conference call, Terry Ferrell, senior product manager for the Zune marketing team, hinted at a Zune phone for the future.
Virtually everything about the second generation Zune has already been made public, so it’s no surprise the conference call had little to do with the current state of the device. The Zune’s past and future were discussed, and, when asked about Microsoft’s plans for expanding the Zune product line outside of the portable media space and possibly into the cellphone world, Ferrell attempted to avoid answering with a non-answer.
"At this point we haven’t made any decisions about a phone or new phone factors," he replied. Oddly, he’s being rather specific in adding the part about "new phone factors" as if something is already in the works. Anyway, he ended the answer by mentioning Microsoft will begin to look at different directions regarding the expansion of the Zune in different hardware forms after the launch gets off the ground this Holiday Season.
So we at least know that Microsoft is considering the notion of a Zune phone, and perhaps they’re holding out on introducing the product as its unknown whether or not the Zune platform will truly take off.
By the way, the picture above is an unknown artist’s rendering of a possible Zune phone.
