Are Zunes outselling iPods?
By Danny Mendez
It appears Zunes are outselling iPods at least through stores on our favorite digital, interactive medium, the web. Microsoft’s favorite PMPs are making a huge impact on some of the web’s biggest stores including Amazon and Buy.com.
Amazon, possibly the Internet’s most well known boutique of all things everything, is featuring the brown Zune 30 as the best selling item in the entire category of electronics. By default, that also means the Zune is the best selling item in the MP3 player category, forcing the 4GB iPod nano into second place, the Apple 80 GB iPod Classic into third, and the 16 GB iPod Touch into fourth. The Zune 80 follows the pack in sixth, and the black Zune 30 proudly holds tenth.
If you head over to Buy.com, you’ll also find, as of the writing of this article, that all flash based Zunes are sold out.
The only Zune-related product at Tiger Direct are the Zune premium buds, indicating that the players are also sold out there.
Any sign of Zune 80 is missing at NewEgg as the flash based Zunes and the Zune 30 are what’s left for now.
The Zune 80 also hit ebay bright and early with units listed at the Buy it Now price of up to $500, although it’s unclear if units are actually selling at such a high price.

Very cool — Athough it’s a little to early to tell if this trend will have any impact. The brown Zune is heavily discounted, and the new Zune is only in sixth place as a new release. I’m an Mac/iPod user, and increased Zune sales will force Apple to keep innovating. Go Zune! It means better MP3’s for everyone.

Not so much… the IPODS have their OWN section folks…. they are not lumped with the other mp3 or media players… therefore you are comparing apples to oranges or in this case… need i go on.

Sorry Mike. Take a look at the Amazon “best sellers” site. All MP3’s are included in the ratings. These may be “apples and oranges”, but they’re both fruit.

Can you tell how many are shipping to locations other than Redmond, Washington?

You’re an idiot! You probably posted the name of this article to get clicks. Shame on me for clicking…

Did anyone bother to look at the price? It is selling for $127. No wonder it is selling well. And Microsoft is no doubt losing money on every sale…

At Amazon.com ipods are included in the mp3 category.
But note that the topselling item is the old 30Gb brown Zune with a massive discount.
The new Zune 2 is #13. Given that new entries usually “spike” initially, this suggests a problem. Please note that sales of ipods through the Apple Store are not counted in any of these.
I would call this concerning for Microsoft, particularly since they have so few models availalbe, while various ipods come up individually.

All that means is that whatever amount of Zunes they ordered are gone. We don’t know how many of them they sold, could be 40, could be 4. Being that the old ones stayed in the channel for a looooong time I suspect that the initial orders for these by retailers were pretty low.
There isn’t enough info to tell.

Co-sign What Ken said!
On the one hand, the Brown Zune that is now #1 at Amazon used to be the worst selling of the Zune models. Amazon cut the price to clear the shelves. Brown is #1 because it is $10 less than Black, and $20 less than the other colors. My guess is that people are buying them to give as Christmas (gag) gifts ;)
On the other hand, the 80 GB Zune 2 is doing surprisingly well. It is currently #8 and out of stock.
If you Zune lovers have a third hand, you can use it to smack yourselves upside your heads as you lament that it’s competitor, the 80 GB iPod Classic, is currently at #3, and other iPods are at #2, #5, #6, and #7.
The close-out priced Sansa SanDisk is currently #4.

Of course, you’re also forgetting that the vast majority of iPod sales happen at Apple’s own stores (both online and brick and mortar). M$ doesn’t have such a store.

who cares?

Who cares? If MS does over take Apple welcome to the world or draconian DRM. What a bunch of chumps.
