Sony claims huge PS3 sales rise in US - Blu ray helped again?

By Dave Parrack

Sony claims huge PS3 sales rise in US - Blu ray helped again?Sony are claiming a massive sales hike in the US for their PS3 console after the recent round of price cuts and new models.

The Japanese company claims that in the week ending November 11, sales of the Playstation 3 rose above 100,000 in America. That includes all types, including the new lower priced 80gb model and the newly introduced 40gb model.

Yahoo! News are reporting Sony chairman and chief executive Howard Stringer as saying:

“It’s the breakthrough we’ve been anticipating. We’ve been holding our breath. “Obviously, we’ve taken so much heat over the year on PS3. Finally, the turning point has been passed.”

Well maybe, but I wouldn’t count your chickens just yet as one or two good weeks doesn’t a recovery make. Before the price cut on October 18th, Sony were selling between 30,000 and 40,000 PS3s a week. Sales rose to 75,000 in the week of October 29th, and have now risen again to over 100,000.

Sony have been helped by the fact that Nintendo are again experiencing shortages of their Wii console, with demand expected to increase even more in the run up to Christmas. This is a point even Stringer concedes, saying “It’s a little fortuitous that the Wii is running out of hardware”.

Sony executives are also claiming that this increase in PS3 sales may help Blu ray win the DVD format war over rival HD DVD, a battle which Stringer said last week was in stalemate.

Andrew House, Sony’s chief marketing officer, said:

“It puts us vastly ahead of where the other format is going to be in terms of an installed base in people’s homes by the end of this holiday season.”

Again, maybe it’s too early to take some short term sales figures and extrapolate that all your troubles are over. Toshiba are still selling standalone HD DVD players for much cheaper than a PS3, and prices are expected to continue dropping throughout the holiday season and beyond.

100,000 unit a week in possible Transformers Blu-ray Disc sales LOST by Paramount.

      Can anyone say, “Morons”!!!

LOL. I love it. How dumb is the guy who inked that deal for HD-DVD exclusivity with Microsoft?

Does he still have a job?

Universal is in the same sinking ship as Paramount.

The “Universal Blunder” has a nice ring to it.

Merry Christmas Paramount & Universal. No bonuses this year!

Hi have been deciding which format to use, if the PS3 keeps selling like this, regardless of the PS3/Blu Ray attach rate is, there will still be a lot more Blu Ray players in the market because of this, and it is still outselling $100 HD-DVD players. I might make the jump to by a PS3 anyways and start buying Blul Ray movies.

I read the article in ur link but can u tell me if there is actually any proof sony paid this guy, or is this just the usual sony-bashing, perhaps he’s just biased, or maybe he just dosn’t like the game (althougth he does seem to over criticize it). It does sound like this guy is bias(althougth i havn’t read the article), but from the statements i’ve heard it isn’t that bad, Ratchet and Clank may not be “vastly superior” than Galaxy but based on the reviews these two games are getting there are going to be a lot of people who do think Ratchet and Clank (it is a really great game) is better. The things he complains about i’ve heard other reviwers complain, about the good but not brilliant graphics, alot of reviwers complained about the camera and of course the storyline (it is an italian plumber in space)
